Training Course on Processing Interstate Child Support Cases

The materials for this course are contained in a 371KB zipped file that may be downloaded by clicking on the link below. When the file is downloaded and the contents extracted, the directory UIFSA will be created, with subdirectories CURRICULUM, HANDOUTS and TRANSPARENCIES. These subdirectories will contain the appropriate course materials (in MicroSoft Word and MicroSoft PowerPoint format).

Opening
The Learning Objectives for the Opening are:
  1. Given a lecture presentation, participants will receive an overview of the training course components, objectives and activities.
  2. Given a lecture presentation, participants will receive all necessary information regarding the training schedule, facilities, and materials.
  3. Given a warm-up exercise, participants will be familiar with other participants, and will be able to identify the trainer(s).

Module 1: Overview
After a presentation and through the completion of an exercise, participants will accurately define the basic terms and laws used in interstate cases.

Module 2: Jurisdictional Principles
After a presentation and through the completion of several case studies, participants will identify when it is appropriate to use long-arm jurisdiction and when it is necessary to file a two-state proceeding under UIFSA.

Module 3: The Controlling Order and Continuing, Exclusive Jurisdiction
After a presentation and through the completion of several case studies, participants will accurately identify which order is controlling and which State has continuing, exclusive jurisdiction, by applying the rules found in UIFSA.

Module 4: Initial Activities
After a presentation, participants will accurately identify the first steps necessary to process an interstate case.

Module 5: Establishment
After a presentation, participants will apply their knowledge of when, where, and how to establish an order, and identify accurately the appropriate interstate forms to be completed when seeking to establish an order.

Module 6: Enforcement
After a presentation and through the completion of several case studies, participants will accurately identify which order to use for enforcement when a case has multiple orders, which enforcement options are available, and where to bring an enforcement action.

Module 7: Modification
After a presentation and through the completion of several case studies, participants will accurately demonstrate which order to use for modification when a case has multiple orders, where an action for modification must be filed in a given case, and the steps necessary to obtain a modification.
